SPEEDO LEAGUE
Six swimmers from Haverfordwest recently competed for the Pembrokeshire
Aces in the Speedo League (Western Division). The team made the final in
second place in the league but were unable to duplicate the rounds 1 and
2 performance in the final and failed to achieve promotion. The swimmers
were: Cara Watson, Tesni Galvin, Ieuan Cooke, Jordan Thomas, Claire Fitzpatrick-Smith
and Matthew Lewis. Well done to you all!!!
Colours Gala
Yet again a great success, our fourth Colours Gala 23/09/07. The theme was
"Mini Beasts". Won this year by the Red team "Red Water Scorpions"-team
manager Shirley Bevan-Captain Matthew Lewis. The poster from the blue team
won "Spongebob Blue Pants"-manager Gareth Thomas-Captain Chelsea Kendall.
An event open to all children in the club masterfully directed by the team
managers and team captains. Tactical game play is what is needed to win
and it was one of the closest, running with all four teams competing right
to the finale to give us the RED Team victorious. All thanks to the organisation
and the clever management and time spent organising the teams and how well
balanced they were to give such a close running event. Thank you to all
for a very successful event.
Keeping in the PINK!
Masterfully organised by Matthew Lewis our most senior swimmer who had a
penchant for swimming in a colour! Dragging along three other willing participants
Luke Watson, Jake Watson and Kieran Williams. How brave! He organised a
relay at the Dyfed Fast Water event at Llanelli on 22/09/07 and the spectators
raised £100 towards Breast Cancer Research. On the 23/09 they again
rose to the occasion to throw down the gauntlet to the team managers of
the Colours teams pledging to swim breaststroke against the managers' freestyle
team. After seeing a masterly swim from team manager Gareth Thomas I don't
think they were quite as confident as they had been and may have been a
little ruffled. As spectators you raised along with the raffle money donated
by the club to Matthew's cause a huge £150, which was quite staggering.
The 2 days raised a magnificent sum of £250, which was presented to
Breast Cancer Research on 29/09/07.
Swimmers meet World Champion!
Swim Wales, South West Region, organised a very successful swim clinic
with world champion swimmer, the dolphin boy James Hickman, at Wales National
Pool, Swansea on Saturday, January 5. A group of 10 swimmers from the
Haverfordwest Swimming Club was selected to participate in the event,
along with 30 other swimmers from swim clubs in the South West region.
The region includes 28 clubs. The clinic targeted young swimmers whose
development is seen as a major priority for Swim Wales. The clinic included
pool work, together with dry-side aerobic training and a stimulating talk
with question and answer session with James Hickman. James Hickman was
the world 200m butterfly champion in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2004.
He was also a Commonwealth 200m butterfly champion in 1998. He held world
records in 100m and 200m butterfly from 1998 to 2001. He was a member
of the GB Olympic team in 1996, 2000 and 2004. James brought a clutch
of his medals to the event, which were a major interest to all the young
swimmers. The event was very successful, with all who participated enjoying
the day. A lasting memory of the day for the swimmers will be the autographs
on their swim kit and Hickman photos. Swim Wales looks forward to these
young swimmers achieving in local, regional and national swimming events
in the future. Who knows, maybe a future world class swimmer will be from
this group.
